THIS WEEK’S QUESTION
Why do I crave things that are bad for me ?
The sense of craving and hunger is best understood as a dynamic of the relationship of our mind and body. Our behaviors are out of balance in situations like addiction, obsession, and overindulgence. The very nature of us as human beings is the aspect of “homeostasis” which means maintaining “same state”.
This answers many things of how often we would prefer to stay with what is familiar and comfortable. This occurs even if when the current situation is painful or harmful.
Old Dog says…
A different way to think about cravings is to focus are developing a better, sincere relationship with your body. Listening more clearly to what is a need to feel more alive as opposed to numbing yourself As you move into practicing more balanced choices and behaviors you find that your hungers and cravings will frequently be healthier encouragements and urges. If, you remain out of balance the cravings will be more addictive and self defeating.
It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
A couple of other considerations…
If, you become more aware of how the “bad” or “self medicating” choices are serving you, you can find easier, healthier alternatives that get you what you need and want in a more satisfying way.
It has been observed that something like a single intense alcohol craving lasts typically 3 - 5 minutes. The good news is that if you can make it through these few minutes things will lessen. The less pleasant news is how frequently urges may return. Staying focused on living in the moment allows you to endure a short interval/challenge rather than adding them all up and feeling hopeless. By repeating the more healthy choice over and over you are programming yourself for true satisfaction and relief. Research also shows that patience is needed in change because new habits may take three weeks or more to become the new “norm”.
